Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
